  • In 1895 The Cuban people rebelled because of there economy. Spain sent 150,000 troops and put the Cubans in Reconstruction camps. It was journalism exaggerate the war to see if the Americans would intervien.
  • The USS Maine blew up killing 250 people on February 15. People blamed Spain even though lots thought it was just gun powder the reason was never revealed.
  • McKinley did not want the United States to go to war so he sent a list of demands to the Spanish. Not all the demands were met and America went to war.
  • McKinley sent demands to the Spanish, they were compensation for the USS Maine , End the Reconstruction camps truce in cuba and Cuban independence.
  • The treaty of Paris was signed in December of 1898 this ended the war.
  • The United States gained The Philippines , Puerto Rico and Guam.
