  • Franz Ferdinand was the Archduke of Austria-Este
  • In June, 1914, he was visiting the capitol of Austria, Sarajevo.
  • While in town, a young man named Gavrilo Princip shot him in the neck.
  • Franz Ferdinand died.
  • Gavrilo Princip was part of an orginization named the Black Hand Society, a military group in Serbia.
  • As a result, Austria declared war on Serbia. Because of alliances, Germany and its allies declared war on Austria. Finally, this caused Austria's allies which included the Allied Powers of Great Britain and France and World War 1 began.
