May 7, 1788 6:00 AM We must wake up so early here. The officers tell us that it is our job to protect the people of Texas with military support, but I am getting tired of protecting them. We are inside these four tall walls with little view of the outside world. The priests have it so much easier than we do. We have to go and get any natives who run away from the mission.
Today I have lookout duty from one of the four high posts that are on the corners of the presidio. I hate having lookout duty during the day because it is so hot. I would much rather be a lookout at night when it is cool and you can doze off without anyone noticing.
7:00 AM We are on our way to breakfast. Each morning we are fed gruel that is so disgusting, it looks like yellowy mush. I do not even want to know what they make it from.
8:00 AM- 5:00PM I often ask myself why I work long hours for little pay. The little money that I have left over after buying weapons and supplies can be used to buy other things when I go to town. I am lucky that I do not have my family here so I can spend my money on myself; men who try and support their family on a soldier’s salary are crazy.
5:00 PM Yellow mush for dinner again. I wonder if we will ever get to eat anything other than this mush? Special occasions often call for meat, but those occasions do not come around often enough.
