Storyboard Text

  • Motif
  • Ok class, so today we will be learning about motifs. Can anyone tell me what a motif is?
  • A motif is a repeating idea.
  • Motif
  • When Jacqueline was depicting New York from the stories she heard from her mother on page 125, she says, "... promises a whole other country on the other side."
  • Was anyone able to track where in the text our motif is mentioned?
  • Thank you for the reminder! One motif we discussed yesterday was "Old Vs. New".
  • On page 112 Jacqueline writes, "After my mother leaves there is no one to say the children can choose their own faith when they're old enough. In my house, my grandmother says, you will do as I do."
  • That text explains the mother's way of raising her children spiritually compared to the grandmother's old way of teaching.
  • This shows how Jacqueline wished to be older so that she would no longer have to wear her ribbons, which is a sign of youth.
  • The motif is also mentioned on page 121 when Jacqueline says, "Each of us dreaming of the day our grandmother says You're too old for ribbons."
