1640: Charles I needs money to fund a war against Scotland.
April 1640: New Parliament meets (Short Parliament). It refuses to grant the king any money. The Short Parliament is dissolved on 5th May.
November 1640: Charles I calls another parliament (Long Parliament) to agree a peace treaty with Scotland.
1640-41: Parliament gets rid of ship money and other royal powers, which annoys Charles.
January 1642: Charles goes to the House of Commons to arrest John Pym and others who were against him but they escape.
August 1642: Charles raises his standard at Nottingham.
