The Native Americans that were in the Southwest region lived in the desert with houses made out of adobe. Adobe is a kind of clay used for building. They also lived in a house called a hogan. A hogan is a rounded house made out of wooden logs, leaves, and mud. The desert is full of prickly cactus, and wild animals. Water was hard to come across, so they had to use it wisely.
The Southwest Native Americans believed in spirits called Kachinas. They believed the Kachinas brought rain to water their crops. They would hold ceremonies where there is a dancer in a special costume. The dancer would hand out the Kachina Dolls to the people of the village. They believed that the Kachinas taught them how to live.
Prickly pears, corn, and berries are the biggest crops of the Southwest. Water is hard to come by, so they have to use it wisely. The Southwest Native Americans usually hunted and ate, snakes, wild turkeys, and rabbits. The Native Americans knew ho to cook corn 50 different ways.
