Hi, welcome to my ecosystem! An ecosystem is a group of animals that live closely in an environment. My environment is also my habitat. My habitat is where I have and will live out my life.
Since I'm a hawk I'm a consumer which means I have to eat other animals to get energy. Because I am a consumer I also am a heterotroph. Being a heterotroph means that I cannot make food on my own, therefore I have to eat other organisms in order to survive.
I am also a predator which means I kill and eat other animals. The animals I eat are called prey. I am a carnivore, therefore I only eat biotic things (elements of an ecosystem that are or were alive).
This is a vole, one of my main sources of food. My niche (my role in my environment) is keeping the vole population down. Population is all members of a species in an environment. Keeping the voles from overpopulating is important because if they did overpopulate then they would use up all the resources and other animals go hungry and even possibly go extinct.
Voles and hawks have a parasitism relationship, which means they have a symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits at the expense of another. In this case the hawk benefits at the expense of the vole. After we eat the meat, the vole decomposes and the vole is recycled into the soil. Recycle means to reuse materials from an environment. In this case, hawks eat the meat and what's left gets decomposed and used to create new plants and put nutrients into the soil.
The process of the hawk and the vole is all part of the food chain. The food chain is one possible route of how energy is passed on an ecosystem. Because a caught the vole I can now feed my family.
