  • Seeing Beyond
  • Ceremony of Selection
  • selected...
  • New Views
  • This scene is important as it is the beginning of Jonas' new life. Throughout his childhood he has always seen the world in black and white, but finally as he gets older he starts recognising that he's seeing things that other people can't, such as the apple turning red. "Does anything seem strange to you?About the Apple?" pg40
  • Precision of Language
  • The ceremony is where the twelves, like Jonas, are assigned their job in the community. However Jonas is not given a job he is selected to be the Reciver of Memory. There is only one receiver of memory and this draws attention to the fact that Jonas is different. "Jonas has not been assigned.Jonas has been selected." pg81
  • Release?
  • In this scene Jonas receives his first memory from the Giver and starts getting to see what its all about. He receives a memory of going down a hill, thats covered in snow, on a sled. He sees colours and snow, somethings that the community no longer has. This scene symbolises Jonas' future power and that having memories give you knowledge. "But what happened to those things?Snow, and the rest of it?" pg110
  • Elsewhere...
  • After Jonas has been taught by the giver for a while now he is starting to feel and learn about emotions. He starts getting curious if his father and other members of his family feel these things, however they don't as these kind of emotions has been taken from them. His family believes that these kind of emotions don't exist. "Your father means that you used a very generalised word, so meaningless it's become almost obsolete" pg162
  • ...love...?
  • Release to elsewhere is another concept that the community doesn't truly understand. In this scene Jonas and the Giver watch Jonas' father release a new born baby to elsewhere and Jonas recognises this kind of action from a memory he received about people killing elephants. His father was killing a baby, but didn't understand what he was actually doing. "He Killed it! My Father killed it!" pg188
  • ...killing it...!
  • After Jonas' father tells him that Gabe, another new born that has been staying with them, is going to be released Jonas moves up his plans to escape the community. He has to travel to elsewhere to give the community their emotions back. By Jonas leaving sooner his growth is presented as he is willing to risk breaking the rules to protect Gabe as he loves him. "Even I voted for Gabriel's release." pg206
