  • Slaves in the south lived in slave quarters, which were crude complexes of poor housing
  • They were given enough nutrients only to function as workers on the plantation
  • Female slaves worked in the fields with men while also completing the housework
  • They were given tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and raising children
  • They generally had to raise children alone since they were often separated from their husbands
  • Lastly, masters sometimes had affairs with them, and the children that those women bore were simply looked upon as more slave workers
