Storyboard Text

  • Symbol
  • Symbol
  • Imagery
  • The symbol is the scarlet ibis bird. This symbolizes doodle the younger brother because doodle was not supposed to survive when it was born. The scarlet ibis bird is not supposed to be where they are and should be dead by now. So should the son doodle. The scarlet ibis is really just a bird that shouldn't be there and should be dead.
  • Theme
  • The symbol is the coffin. This symbolizes the coffin that doodle is supposed to be buried in. The family still kept the coffin because doodle could still die in the near future and they want to keep it for that reason. This really means that they are expecting him to die so they want to keep one on hand.
  • Dynamic Character
  • Imagery is visually descriptive or figurative language. This is imagery because this is showing what he tells doodle what will happen if he does not learn to walk. It says in the text Then I would paint him a picture of us as old him, white haired, him with a long white beard, and me still puling him around in a go car. This never failed to make him try again. This is on page 354.
  • Personal Reaction
  • I believe that the theme of this story is conflict between love and pride for the older brother. I chose this theme because older brother does not really like doodle because he was a dysfunctional little brother. The older one has to put his love before his pride if he wants his little brother to walk and talk like him. It says in the story If I so much as picked up my cap he'd start crying to go with me and mama would call from where ever she was, "Take doodle with you." He has to put his love before his pride and take doodle where ever he went.
  • The older brother is the dynamic character in the story because at the beginging he did not really like his brother and thought very low of him. He thought he would not survive. But during the story he starts to change and at the end when doodle passes he falls to the ground and screams. He really did love his little brother and changed because he is so upset that he passed.
  • At the end of the story I feel really upset about what happened to Doodle when he died. I think that at the beginning of the story he was not a vert good brother to doodle because he did not treat him very well and thought very low of him. At the end of the story and in the middle he was being a good big brother teaching him how to walk and run and do things like him. So towards the end yes I did think he was a good big brother.
