Hey Dad! Want to hear something cool? My friend just told me that we evolved from monkeys!
Honey, that's not exactly true. Come inside, let me explain!
It is a common misconception to believe humans were the evolution of monkeys, but our ancestor was not a monkey itself, it was an ape-like creature.
But then Dad, why are humans not like these ape-like creatures? How did we evolve into humans?
Well, this is theory by Charles Darwin. He developed this theory during his famous Beagle voyage. During this voyage, he travelled to many small islands around South America.
One of them being the Galapagos Island. On this island is where he discovered natural selection!
Natural Selection? What's that?
Good question! Natural selection is the concept of evolution. It's when species have more suitable traits that make them more likely to reproduce and survive. Survival of the fittest is a phrase used to describe natural selection.
So Dad, what evidence do we have to prove evolution?
10-12 million years ago, primates that were mammals, split into two lineages. These two lineages evolved separately: the first group were the great apes that lived in trees and the second group evolved to live on land.
