Being the son of a wool merchant, Christopher Columbus got a job offer on a merchant ship in his teens and remained at sea until 1470.
While sailing with the merchants north along the Portuegese coast, French privateers attacked his ship. The boat sank and young Christopher Columbus floated to shore on a scrap of wood. He then made his way to Lisbon, Portugal where he studied mathematics, astronomy, cartography, and navigation.

Christopher Columbus became older and he thought sailing to Asia through the Cape Of Good Hope would be difficult. So he made a plan to sail west of the Atlantic Ocean. He recited his plan to King Ferdinand of Aragon and Isbella Of Castile.
On August 3,1492, Columbus and his crew set sail in three ships: The Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. On October 12th, the ships made landfall - not in Asia, as Columbus assumed, but on one of the Bahamian islands.

After three voyages to the Caribbean, Columbus was jailed by the Spanish Crown for abuses to the natives while aboard.
