Alice walks down the street of Toronto and sees a group of people gathering around the newspaper stand.
I wonder whats so interesting in the newspaper today that all the adults need to be talking about!
The Toronto Globe Stock Market Crashes causing loss of millions of dollars!
Alice overhears a conversation she's not supposed to hear and she is shocked at the news.
Liz, I lost my job today. My boss said that our company couldn't afford to keep me on because of the amount of money it lost.
What are we going to do? The children need new shoes for school and we were barely making enough to put food on the table!
Alice's mom decides to save their food for her daughter, by skipping meals.
Your father should bring home some food for you dear. I'm not too hungry tonight.
Mom, where's dinner?
Alice's Dad found it difficult to cope with the stress of providing for his family. He began spending too much time in bars and drinking away at his financial problems.
Several families around Canada suffered like Alice's family due to the Stock Market Crash. Eventually, the crash led to the Great Depression, one of the most devastating economic times in history.
For those of you who didn't have to live through the Great Depression, you wouldn't understand how difficult it was for my family. What I've learned about the economy, is that whenever our stocks are rising high to a peak, they will come crashing down resulting in something similar to what happened in October of 1929. Let's hope for a future with a steady economy, rather than hoping for a high rise.
