Nova Artino, who is an undercover villain in the superhero Renegade team, is trying to complete her uncle's mission to destroy the Renegades. The Renegades failed to save Nova's family and now she wants to make them pay. But for now, she needs to act in a Renegade role. A new villain who has risen up from the shadows, Hawthorn has been stealing medicine needed by hospitals. While Nova and her team, Adrian, Oscar, Ruby, and Danna, try to stop Hawthorn, she escapes using her thorn appendage powers.
Adrian is the adopted son of two of the lead Renegades, Captain Chromium and the Dread Warden, but he has a secret alias. He puts on a robotic suit, made by his powers and becomes the Sentinel. No one knows that he is the hero behind the suit. He tried to stop Hawthorn when his team failed, but was flung into the river, his suit weighing him down. After a narrow get away, everyone thinks the Sentinel is dead.
Adrian believes that it's a good thing people think the Sentinel is dead. While he still wants to help save the city he loves, the Sentinel is thought of as a vigilante who needs to be stopped. He also doesn't know what his dad's will think when they find out he's been breaking all of the rules they have been trying to set forth. He also wants to find out who his mother's killer is and put an end to them.
Nova's villain alias is Nightmare, she can put people to sleep just by touching their skin. Her uncle, Ace Anarchy, fought, and won for prodigy freedom, but it caused havoc. Many people believed that the Renegade leaders killed Ace, but he is alive. In order for him to use his full potential again, he needs his helmet, which was thought to have been destroyed, but Nova knows it is still around at the Renegade Headquarters.
When Nova gets a job at the Renegade's archives, which is full of weapons and trinkets used by prodigies, she finds that her uncle's helmet was encased in an impenetrable box of chromium, made from the Captain himself. While she is a whiz at science, she can't think of a possible way to break it out. But, she is willing to do it for the revenge.
If the helmet wasn't bad enough, a new break through was made in the prodigy world. Scientists had created a drug called "Agent N." When injected into a prodigy they become completely human, with no reverse process. Both Adrian and Nova are afraid of these results. Their alter-egos are at stake. Emotions are high, and many changes happen throughout the book. But, in the end one team prevails over the other, even if by only a little.
