On Maple Street, somewhere in America, we are intorduced to the residents who are talking with each other and children are playing (typicalneighborhood). When suddenly a meteor-light streaks across the sky and all the power goes out. Then a man, Pete Van Horn, goes to see if there is power in Floral Street.
Steve Brand is going to leave town to see what is going on, but a young boy, Tommy doesn't want him to and he says that this is the what happens in every comic. None of the neighbors believe Tommy and they tell his mother that he is reading to many comics or watching to many movies. Then Tommy tells Steve, "You might not even be able to get to town. It was that way in the story. Nobody could leave. Nobody except-- "them". He tells them the first part of there plan is to send people that look like humans, but aren't.
I know who it is.. It's the boy, Tommy!
The residents start to see which on of them aren't human. Les Goodman gets accused fist because his car started and stopped on its own and he is up late at night looking at the sky and the neighbors question this, but he explains that he has insomnia. Then Steve tries to be the peacemaker, but he just gets accused right after Les fo working on a radio, beacuse the residents thought he was communicating with someone else, but him and his wife tried to explain it was just a ham radio and everyone has them.
And this is pattern is always the same?
With a few variations. They pick the most dangerous enemy the cand find... and it's themselves. And all we need to do is sit back... and watch.
There is a strange thing coming towards the town and everyone gets scared. Charlie gets a shot gun and he shoots the thing lurking in the dark and it turns tout to be Pete Van Horn and Charlie says he was trying to protect him home, but then all of the residents start to accuse him and say he is eager to find a scapegoat and eager to kill.
They all chase after Charlie and throw things at him, but then he tells them he knows who the mostor is. He says it is the boy, Tommy, beacuse he knew all about what was going to happen, so they all started to chase after Tommy and his mother. They all start to balme eachother, they go carzy, and they start to destroy themselves.
The aliens discuss thier furth plans on how to destroy the world. The narrator than says, "The tool of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices- to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy and a thoughtless frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own for the children . . . and the children yet unborn. And a pity of it is . . . that these things cannot be confined to . . . The Twilight Zone!”
