  • This is the story of James Chadwick by Lara and
  • Priya
  • James Chadwick, a famous physicist in the 1900s was born in Bollington, England on October, 20th 1891.
  • He was born to Joseph and Anne Chadwick. Joseph Chadwick was a railway keeper and Anne Chadwick was a domestic servant. Both were poor and tried hard to provide for their family.
  • As a result of his parent’s financial situation when Chadwick got into the Manchester Grammar School, his parents couldn’t afford to send him.
  • Chadwick attended Manchester University. and got his M.Sc. degree in 1913. and majored in physics
  • He instead attended the Manchester Central Grammar School for Boys. He loved math and physics.
  • He was recognized by many universities for his great accomplishments
  • He initially started his experiment trying to prove that gamma radiation would not be the result of alpha particles falling on light elements. Chadwick’s hypothesis was proven correct, as he discovered that the result wasn’t gamma radiation, but rather a beam of neutrons. With this experiment, Chadwick was able to prove the existence of neutral particles in atoms called neutrons.
  • In his experiment, Chadwick projected alpha particles toward Beryllium. After the particles dropped on Beryllium, they fell on paraffin wax. The wax then released another type of particle: protons. At the time, atoms were thought to be made only of protons and electrons.
  • James Chadwick contributed to the current model of the atom, The Atomic Model. He had studied and worked with another contributor to this model, Ernest Rutherford.
  • Chadwick made a immensely vital discovery to the creation of the atomic model. He discovered neutrons and that they were located in the nucleus of the atom.
  • In conclusion, James Chadwick is an amazing scientist who made a pivotal discovery about neutrons that has changed the world today. That’s all about James Chadwick!
