  • Those racist Southerners! California should just be a free state
  • Those Northerners don't know the importance slaves have! We treat them just fine! AY you over there, NO DINNER TONIGHT
  • My name is Henry Clay and I propose a compromise!
  •  The North wanted California to be admitted as a slave-free state. Sectionalism impacted this becasue the North wanted a majority, which divided them from the South. Additionally, personal liberty laws passed in the North didn't force people to return escaped slaves back to their owners. This upset the South. 
  • What are you doing here? Where is your master? I have to return you. 
  • As California applied for statehood as a free state, the South was afraid that the North would gain a majority in the government. Additionally, the North refusing to comply with the Fugitive Slave law and wanting to abolish slavery in D.C. was upsetting. 
  • Whatever! Those Southerners can suffer. I believe in free soil!
  • Henry Clay proposed a Compromise. This entailed that California be admitted as a free state, territory gained from the Mexican War have no restriction on slavery, the ending of the slave trade, the allowing of slavery in D.C., and a stricter fugitive slave law. 
  • The Compromise of 1850 entailed that there be a Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. This required everyone to return escaped slaves back to their owners. It was enforced all of the US.
  • However, there was a Northern defiance of the Fugitive Slave Act which greatly angered the South. To the South, it flt that one of the wins from the Compromise was just being ignored.
