  • Alexander Hamilton
  • Washington
  • We should support the British!
  • We should support the french!
  • Thomas Jefferson
  • Still, it is not the right thing to do.
  • Alexander Hamilton
  • What am I going to do?
  • We made a treaty with france! We must help.
  • Thomas Jefferson
  • I am a federalist!
  • HELP ME!!
  • I'm a democratic Republican!
  • There was a war going on in France, and there was a disagreement in America about who to help. There were two different groups of people arguing, one led by Alexander Hamilton, and the other Thomas Jefferson. This upset Washington.
  • We loosely interpret the constitution!
  • Federalists: - Strong central government -Pro British -Favored national Bank and tariffs -Led by Hamilt
  • We follow the constitution exactly!
  • Democratic Republican: -Support french -Mostly farmers from the south -Led by Jefferson -Opposed national bank and tarifffs
  • Hamilton wanted close ties with England, while Jefferson was from france, and wanted to support them. However, they have forgotten one thing-they have a treaty with France. The argument continued after that, still with Washington upset.
  • Jefferson hates me, the government is unstable because of this fight. The alien and sedition acts are making it even worse!
  • The two groups declared each of them a different name . Hamilton's group was called the Federalists, and Jefferson's the Democratic Republicans. Washington was getting desperate.
  • But..but.
  • Victory to the Republicans!!!!
  • Each group had their own beliefs and values. They each grew very strong in their own ways. The Federalists were more like elitists, who believed they were above everyone else, while the DR believed that they were everyday people.
  • George Washington was freaking out. During his previous Farewell Address, he stated that he was hopeful that we would stay neutral in issues involving other countries, now known as the Neutrality Proclamation. This argument was the opposite.
  • By 1800, the whole thing was dying down. Teh federalists had split into 2 groups and the republicans were planning to run Jefferson for president. Jefferson became president and Burr vice. After that the Federalist party started to decline.
