They need to cross the river so they could get to safety, crossing the river will make it so that the British can't get to them. It's very important for them to go back so their army's don't get even smaller.
They needed a way to get away from the British, but they didn't have boats. They decided to steal some boats. A guy came out who was in charge of boats and didn't like how the colonist were going to steal them.
They found out that Hessians were going to help the British fight against them. They were already outnumbered. They talk and came up with an idea that they were going to sneak attack on the Hessians.
They leave at 5:30, but it takes them a while for them to cross the river. They plan to attack when it's still dark outside, but because it took them to long they didn't get there until it was daylight.
It was Christmas day and they made it. They attacked the Hessians at 8:00 while they were sleeping. Some of the Hessians tried to defend themselves, but it was not successful. One colonist shot the Hessian commander and he told the Hessians to surrender. None of the Americans were killed or even wounded. The attack was successful.
Even though the soldiers were tired from marching and attacking the Hessians, George Washington wouldn't let them sleep until they crossed the river again to safety.
