Storyboard Text

  • Wow, to think the Romans made something as important as concrete. They must have used it for all sorts of things, like their vaults, domes, arches and such.
  • As you can see, the Romans were very inspired by the Greeks. They learned from Greek sculptures and made them more lifelike and realistic.
  • Those guys were mixing broken stone with sand, water, and cement to make concrete.
  • Yea, look at these tall buildings. And the sidewalk, too! There's no building material as reliable as concrete.
  • Amazing, right? Today we use concrete in so many different things. House foundations, pavements, walls, too many things to name. Imagine the modern world without it.
  • Okay. Can we do religion next?
  • The simulation only lasts so long, by the way. Let's speed through this so we can get through everything.
  • Sure.
  • And obviously, millions of people still practice Christianity today. There are churches all over the U.S. where people worship their God.
  • The Roman Empire really helped spread Christianity, even though it was unintentional at first. The large networks of roads allowed for ideas to flow. An emperor even made it the official religion.
  • It was where power shifted to the people and they elected representative leaders to make laws and handle political business.
  • The Roman Republic is no doubt a very important legacy.
  • It was a tripartite government as well, with three branches. Judicial, executive, legislative.
  • The U.S. democracy is based on the Roman idea of power in the hands of people and elected leaders. Anyone could be elected regardless of wealth or social standing in Rome, and now today, too.
