  • Danny and Reuven, 2 teenage boys, first meet at  baseball game that is initially friendly and fun, but it turns into a "war" The game is quite even and Reuven gets injured a few times trying to make good plays. Reuven and Danny both being the star players of their teams face off, with Danny batting and Reuven pitching. Danny swings it hard and the ball hits Reuven in the eye causing him to go to the hospital.

  • Reuven is taken to the hospital by his coach Mr. Galanter. Reuven says his head hurts and his arm is sore. Reuven remembers the doctor taking him in, but after that it's all a blur. Reuven wakes up in a hospital bed and is told that he had gotten glass in his eye from his glasses, but Dr.Snydman got it out . Reuven starts to feel much better.

  • While in the hospital, Reuven make two new freinds. One is a former boxer named Mr. Savo, who is in the hospital due to getting punched in the eye. Reuven also meets a young boy named Billy who is blind, but plans to get an operation so he can see. Surprisingly Danny comes to see Reuven at the hospital to appologize. The first time Reuven is still upset at Danny but Reuven's father tells him that he should at least let Danny speak. Danny and Reuven soon become friends.
  • Reuven returns back to his normal life and begins to go to school again. He begins to become good friends with Danny and they even spend Shabbats together. Danny tells Reuven that Danny's father wants to meet Reuven to see if he is a worthy friend. Danny's father puts Reuven through a test in which Reuven passes the test and begins to study Talmud with Danny and his father. Reuven learns that Danny's father raises him in silence and tries to talk to Danny through Reuven.
  • Reuven and Danny spend most of their time at the library. Danny loves books because he doesn't get to see a lot of the outside world because his father wants him to be a Rabbi, so he pushes him a lot when it comes to religion. Danny tells Reuven that he does not want to become a Rabbi but his brother is too sick to do it. Reuven tells Danny that he wants to go into mathematics. Meanwhile, the entire world is shaking due to World War 2.
