Storyboard Text

  • Rural Areas (Great Britain)
  • Countrysides are becoming overcrowded, many of us decided to move into the town and work in factories.
  • Why is it that you and your folks decided to migrate into the town?
  • Urban Areas (Great Britain)
  • Well, the city needed more people every now and then, and they're more jobs here as well.
  • Why did you folks decide to move into the town?
  • Factories and Industries The Urban Area
  • We're forced to work for a really long time with very few breaks for little pay in order for the factories to get profit out of us.  Some of us become ill from this as well.
  • How has it been lately, after working in factories, and living in the city?
  • They decided to do this because there were more job opportunities for them in the city than in the rural areas where most people live in.
  • Inside the Factories
  • Since at this time, there was a giant leap in industrialization in England, factories needed more workers/laborers to work for them. This also somewhat aligns with what people from the country side wanted.
  • Urban Areas (Great Britain)
  • wow... It seems like groups of workers are now joining to form a rebellion against worker's rights.
  • Businesses/business owners were in need of workers. With a long line of people willing to work, employers could set wages as low as they wanted because people were willing to do work as long as they got paid anyways.
  • Urban Areas (Great Britain)
  • In addition to that,  There were a lot of machines with not many safety precautions. This resulted in many accidents. All these laborers getting treated wrongly just to about receive only $8-$10 dollars a week, while getting breaks on only lunch and dinner times
  • The only light present was the sunlight that came through the windows. Machines spit out smoke and in some factories, workers came out covered in black soot by the end of the day.
  • Therefore, Labor Unions formed because workers wanted to put a stop to long hours with little pay. They demanded more pay and fairer treatment. They did not want children to work in factories because of the danger involved. Then, Labor unions organized strikes and protests.
  • The unions organized strikes and negotiated with employers for better working conditions and pay. However, this wasn't always a peaceful process. When employers tried to replace striking workers, the workers sometimes fought back. In some cases, things became so violent that the government had to step in and restore order.
