  • After McKinley was assassinated, Roosevelt took office.
  • Ferdinand de Lesseps began digging the canal.
  • Tropical disease and engineering problems stopped construction.
  • COUGH COUGH
  • Roosevelt agreed $40 million for rights. He then offered $10 million to Columbia for the isthmus, but they refused.
  • $10 mill for 50?
  • NO.
  • Roosevelt sends in troops for support.
  • Chief engineer of New Panama Canal Comp. set up a revolt.
  • The rebels accept original $10 million and give complete control to the US.
  • It's all yours! 110% yours!

  • Work problems included extreme heat, mosquitoes, and obstacles such as jungles and mountains.
