Storyboard Text

  • Harriet Martineau: loved reading, writing, wrote Society in America, wrote of Morals and Manners
  • I translated Comte's Positive Philosophy into English & wrote extensively about sociology & child socialization.  You know..we have reason & we've responsible for our actions, right?
  • Of course!  I opened the 1st Hull House in Chicago. I wrote many books about sociology. I think we must find ways to work together so everyone can develop.
  • Jane Addams: social reformer, social theorist, and writer.
  • Charlotte Perkins Gilman: writer, at 15 realizes women have desires too, almost has mental breakdown.
  • We need to work together BUT no one can MAKE you do anything. You have will. I published Women and Economics.  I also studied the home and male dominance over females.
  • I see domination between blacks and whites, not only men and women! I reported about unfair lynching & created a group to unify African Americans.
  • Ida B. Wells:  writer, editor, and seeked justice for lynching.
  • Thanks Ida! I delivered speeches about the negro problem.  There sure is domination, I was a colored principal. Some people thought I was unfit. Domination is wrong.....we all need progress.
  • Anna Julia Cooper: tutored adult men in reading/writing, admitted to Oberlin, was a teacher  & principal.
