La Bamba by Gary Soto
In the beginning of the story, Manuel had volunteered to sing in the school talent show. It was lunch time, and he was sitting with his friend Benny. Benny was going to play his trumpet in the talent show. Benny suggested Manuel danced whil he sang.
Later, at practice, Manuel was waiting to go on stage. Benny went before him. Benny blew on his trumpet so loudly that Manuel dropped his record that had the song on it. Manuel wasn't actually singing, just lip syncing, so he depended on that record.
Luckily, the record did not break. Manuel felt relieved. He was sure nothing bad would happen at the talent show.
Later, at the show, Manuel was on stage. But suddenly, the record stuck. It must have scratched when he dropped it. Manuel was forced to sing the same line, La Bamba, over and over again.
Manuel felt humiliated. He could hear people laughing at him. Later, backstage, he heard people talking about how funny he was. They thought he was hilarious. People were paying attention to him and he was enjoying the limelight. Manuel was very happy.
