A detailed description of a story involving love, war, crime, injustice, fear, and crippling heartbreak, History Has It's Eyes On You revolves around the lives of six main families and their hardships as they try and survive through the times of the Civil War.
Cora is visited late one night by an Army General to tell her that her husband, Nicholas, has died during battle. Cora, who had been throwing a party to celebrate her twins christening, has a nervous breakdown upon hearing the news and tries to commit suicide by drowning herself in the lake. The Army General saves her and
Adeline looses her baby and her handmaid Leah is there to console her as Adeline has to endure labor in order to pass her deceased child. Leah keeps Adeline company and helps her through childbirth and keeps her alive. Although Adeline's child was originally a burden to her, she is distraught by the sudden death. Adeline's husband is cold towards her regarding the death of their child and he begins an affair with Clara.
Katherine and her lover Jasper are caught by Jasper's maid, Hazel Grace. Hazel Grace is extremely loyal to Jasper's wife, Olivia and rushes to tell her immediately. Tormented by the knowledge of her husband's affair, Olivia publicly shames Jasper and Katherine for their deeds. Katherine's husband, a well known politician, divorces her instantly and Katherine becomes an outcast of the town. Jasper refuses to initiate a divorce with Olivia, so Olivia and Hazel Grace escape one night and travel to Canada where they can be free.
Maxwell and Margo, brother and sister, are orphaned after their father dies in the war and their mother is struck with illness. In their struggle to provide for themselves, Maxwell is arrested on a false charge. Margo, who is only twelve, then becomes homeless, as the landlord of their apartment building will not permit her to stay alone. She makes her way by working on a travelling circus. She begins working for the circus while they're in town, but when they begin to take off for the next city, Margo decides to hop the train and join them. She visits Maxwell in jail one last time, where he tells her that his chances of getting out are slim. He gives Margo his blessing and tells her to stay kind. When Margo hops the train, she meets a boy named Theo and they become good friends.
Roman and Paige are newlyweds who are hiding a big secret from both of their families. Paige is four months pregnant and her family would disown her if they found out. Not wanting to be shamed by her family, Paige and Roman hide the baby after it's born. They keep their child locked in the cellar, where Paige goes to visit her once a day. Paige names her Daisy. Roman insists on having other children that their families can know about and so they have three more children; Alexander, Michael, and Claudia. One day, Michael and Claudia discover their older sister in the cellar and they beg their parents to let her out and live in the house with them. When Roman puts his foot down, Claudia decides to release her sister anyway. In a fit of rage at her parents, especially her mother, Daisy kills Roman and Paige and decides to raise her siblings. She scares them and they tell the towns chief of police who comes to take Daisy away, only to find that she has killed herself out of guilt.
Elsie and Isla are Irish immigrants that moved to America to escape the famine and disease in their country. They meet a man named Russell who takes them in and falls in love with Elsie. They cannot get married due to Elsie's citizenship status, but Russell refuses to let that stop them from living a normal life. When Russell is drafted into the war, Elsie and Isla have a hard time adjusting to life without him. Elsie is denied service at most of the shops in their area because of her heritage, which causes problems when she tries to go food shopping. Elsie and Isla struggle to survive but the war ends and Russell returns home, missing a leg, but otherwise completely fine.
