Storyboard Text

  • Rooting Reflex
  • William James
  • Habituation
  • I  so used to seeing everything in this room because I am in here so often!
  • The Rooting Reflex causes a newborn baby to look for his or her mother's breast when something touches their cheek.
  • Visual Preference
  • James thought that newborns experienced "blooming, buzzing confusion", but scientists later discovered that babies can tell you a lot if you focus on what they can do, such as gazing, sucking, and turning their heads.
  • 8-12 inches
  • It is defined as a decrease in responding with repeated stimulation.
  • Smell
  • I was just born yesterday and I already know exactly what my mom smells like!
  • Researchers have used this to ask 4-month olds how they recognize cats and dogs. When shown a picture of a cat-dog hybrid, the baby focused on the face rather than the body.
  • 8-12 inches refers to the fact that we prefer to look at objects 8-12 inches away
  • The baby would be able to see that picture the best from 8-12 inches
  • Within days after being born, the brain's neural network were stamped with the smell of the mother's body.
