  • A British naval blockade prevented food and arms from being shipped to Germany. Because of the blockade US was the main source of food and sullies for the allies. Germany retaliated by sinking merchant ships delivering goods to Britain

  • The Germans declared unrestricted submarine warfare sinking all ships in the area of the blockade. This violated the principle of freedom of the seas.

  • In 1915 the Lusitania was a passenger ship that left New York City for Britain. Unknown to the passengers the cargo below the deck was made up of Munitions for the war. A German submarine sank the ship killing 1,198 passengers. 128 were american.
  • French ferry boat that a German submarine attack to killing 50 passengers. President Wilson treated to break ties with Germany. Germany pledged not to sink citizen ships without warning
