For 35 girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. But for America Singer, it is a nightmare. It means leaving her boyfriend Aspen and her home of Illéa.
America didn't like what the Selection was about, but Aspen insisted that she went so she put her name in for him. Going into it, she knew it would be a mistake and wanted to go back home as soon as possible.
When she first arrives at the palace, she meets prince Maxon. She later then realizes that life with Maxon isn't so bad. She thinks maybe they can be friends and talk to eachother when needed, but then realizes that she may have deeper feelings.
After becoming close with prince Maxon, she realizes she may like him more than just a friend. She is then faced with a major conflict. Her old boyfriend, Aspen, who convinced her to sign up for the Selection, became a guard at the palace. But, she doesn't know if she loves him anymore.
America talks to both Aspen and Maxon and has to make a decision on what to do. She doubts the Selection and thinks that the life she is living may not compare to the future she wants for herself. Well she choose Aspen or Maxon?
In the end, America decides that she is going to put all her feelings away for Aspen, and put all focus into Maxon. She realizes that the Selection was a part of her and she was glad to have Maxon by her side.
