  • Martin Luther became a monk. He posted 95 statements on the door of the Wittenberg church. He didn't agree with the way the church was treating people.

  • I'm bored!
  • By reading the New Testament, Luther realised that we are only saved by grace, through faith, as a gift of God. He shared this with everyone he met.
  • Luther's ideas spread
  • He argued with various priests, and was excommunicated, which meant he was forced to leave the church. Some priests and princes agreed with him, but others were angry. His life was in danger.
  • Some of Luther's friends "kidnapped" him to hide him away. He translated the New Testament from Latin into German while he was hiding. This also led to the development of one German language.
  • The invention of the printing press allowed both Luther's German Bible and his writings to be reproduced and distributed throughout Germany. He continued to be a controversial character until his death at the age of 62.
