Kent Vs United States(1996)
Kent Morris. is 16 years old and was arrested for stealing from different stores! He had been counted for 3 home burglaries, 3 robberies of a public store, and 3 counts of drug possession in DC!
Kent would be punished as an adult. It was decided that Kent would be sent to jail for 30-90 years.
The Lawyer appealed wanting him to be sent back to Juvenile Court, where the penalties are not severe!
The Supreme Court ruled against Kent. It states that,a minor can be tried and punished as an adult. However, the Justices said that in deciding whether to remove a case from juvenile court, judges must weigh a variety of factors, including the seriousness of the crime; the juvenile's age; and the defendant's criminal background and mental state.
This can impact students because if the punishment is very severe we can be trialed as an adult!
