Storyboard Text

  • Please, Grandmere, tell me more about the saints.
  • St. Sulpice
  • We regret to inform you that your father, Louis De La Salle, has passed away
  • Born April 30, 1651, De La Salle was raised to be God-fearing by his relatives, most notably his grandparents, Jean Moet and Perrette Lespagnol. His grandfather taught him how to recite the divine office while his grandmother sparked in him an interest in the lives of saints.
  • Licentiate in Sacred Theology
  • The spark that his grandmere imbued in him, as well as his experience in the grand cathedral of Rheims, inspired him to study in Sorbonne University in Paris, France when he was 19 years old. While there, he lived in the St. Sulpice Seminary, an institution known for its emphasis on self sacrifice and self discipline.
  • École pour les Garçons
  • We've done it!
  • Unfortunately, this routine-based life was not to last as eighteen months after his matriculation, he had lost both his parents and had to manage his new guardianship over his younger siblings as well as his role as executor of the estate.
  • In spite of these tragedies, De La Salle persevered through it all. After settling his family affairs, he proceeded to complete his Licentiate in Theology (1676) and be ordained as a priest (1678).
  • Following this, spiritual adviser Nicholas Roland passed away and left De La Salle in charge of overseeing a group of nuns, the Sisters. A year later in March, De La Salle crossed paths with Adrian Nyel, who needed help in putting up a charity school for boys in Rheims. Nyel stayed with De La Salle for consultation on the area and, soon enough, the school was opened.
  • Soon enough, De La Salle became more and more involved with the school and the teachers, even letting them live in his home (1681). He later rented a house in Rue Neuve  for them to live in together.
