Storyboard Text

  • "Id sooner go to work in a shop," I cried Pg. 7
  • Why can't I work?
  • Because you are small and skinny. No one will hire you.
  • "More and more I began to think inside myself, I don't want to sell herring for the rest of my days. I want to learn something....But how can I do it if I live in this hell house of Father's preaching and Mother's complaining ?" Pg.66
  • "I'll never let no father marry me away to any old yok," I threw after him. And he made believe that he didn't hear me." Pg. 85
  • I will never let no father marry me away to any old yok!
  • This is a good example for dependence because Sara wanted to find a job on her own so she can help provide for her family. In most cases, children her age wouldnt want to start working, they would much rather be hanging out with friends and not caring about anyone else but themselves. Here Sara is trying to prove to her family that she is able to get a job and that she is able to get it sooner than her eldest sister.
  • "Blindly, I grabbed my things together into a bundle. I didn't care where I was going or what would become of me. Only to break away from my black life only not hear Father's preaching voice again." Pg. 136
  • Where do you think you are going?
  • Here Sara shows that she starting to have thoughts about being more than just a lady who cooks and cleans. She wants to BE someone. These kind of thoughts show dependence because she is starting to think about how life would be without her father. Her parents never encouraged her to go to school/college or to get a great job. Her parents limited her from her capabilities. They told her that she has to get married and have a husband to look after her. She didn't want that. She wanted to take care of herself
  • "I celebrated it alone with my self. I celebrated it in my room, my first clean room, my first clean, empty room." Pg.241
  • My first clean empty room.
  • Sara stood up to her father which shows that she is becoming more dependent. The reason is also another act of dependence because she is basically telling her father that no one is going to choose her husband but her. As I previously said, this is a way of saying that it will be her decision when the right time or place is when she will get married because she didn't want her father to choose her husband if she wasn't going to be in love with him. Making these types of decisions is making her more and more dependent.
  • "Father!" I ventured, hesitatingly. "Would you care to live with me?"
  • Father, would you care to live with me?
  • Sara finally gave up and just decided to leave without thinking about it. Here she marks the day of her dependence because she finally decides to leave on her own not knowing where she is going or what will happen to her. She knows for sure that she doesn't want her father there with her controlling her life forever. She knows or sure what goal is, now all she has to figure out is how to get there. That is another act of dependence
  • I didn't care where I was going or what would become of me . Only to break away from my black life only not hear fathers preaching.
  • After Sara graduates she ends up doing very well as a dependent. She finds a nice place, a quiet lonely place, which she likes. She is pleased with herself because she did it all by herself. Here she is basically looking back at the struggles that crossed her in the beginning of her journey and looking at how well things came around. She is grateful for completing her long-term goal all by herself without having anyone help her.
  • Here, Sara shows that she is dependent and will be taking care of her father who is independent. She takes on that responsibility of taking care of her father. Her responsibility also shows that she is dependent because she had taken matters into her own hands. Even though she is unsure of it she knows its the right thing to do and her mother would be proud of that. Her dependence has made her into the bigger person and makes her stronger more and more each day
