Scribes can only be men. They are the ones that keep the records. Some scribes work for the government and some work for priests.
Scribes are respected and well paid. They are under the priests on the social pyramid.
Scribes start school at the age of five. They spent 12 years or more learning hieroglyphs. They have to memorize over 700 hieroglyphs. The schools are run by priests, and they wrote on pieces of wood, stone, papyrus, and bits of pottery.
In scribe schools beatings were common and there were strict rules. School was sometimes from sunrise to sunset. They were punished for being lazy or not paying attention.
