Stan is Eminem's biggest fan. He writes letters to him all the time, since he met him in Denver. Stan feels a very close bond to him and relates to him very much, and even looks like Eminem. Stan doesn't understand why Eminem won't reply back to his letters. His girlfriend is pregnant and jealous and confused to Stan's obsession with Eminem, a rapper.
All he does is stare at Eminem and fantasize over him.
Slim Shady, I am your biggest fan, Stan. I relate to your cousin Ronnie dying, your paps leaving your mommy.
Eminem still hasn't replied to Stan's letters, and Stan is getting very frustrated with this. He believes Eminem is a liar and disrespectful and rude for not answering. He is so angry that he cuts himself and hints toward suicide. Eminem is the antagonist as he cause conflict by not replying and Stan is the protagonist.
Eminem never replied to Stan's letter, and now this is Stan's breaking point. Stan is taking his girlfriend and driving on the bridge while intoxicated. He is getting revenge on him for never answering. Stan is also blaming his suicide drowning on Eminem, saying he could have saved him (by replying) but now its too late. Stan, next to his pregnant girlfriend who is held hostage by him, off the bridge to their death.
HELP ME! HE IS DRUNK AND CRAZY!
I RIPPED ALL YOUR PICTURES OFF THE WALL!
I HATE YOU EM!
Now in the point of view of Eminem, he responds to Stan. Eminem apologizes for not replying, and didn't mean to hurt Stan. Stan takes what Eminem says in his song literally, and does what Eminem does in life and says in songs(cut wrists, dye hair blonde, etc). Eminem tells Stan he needs help, before he does something he can not take back. Stan finally gets what he wanted, a response, but it is too late.
Dear Stan, it's Em. I never meant to upset you. Here's an autograph for your brother, I wrote it on the starter cap. You've got some issues Stan, you need some counselling, and to treat your girl better. I saw this guy drive off a bridge with his pregnant girl, it made me sick, I don't want you to do that crazy shit. But come to think about it, his name... it was you.
Eminem realizes that the man in the news who killed his pregnant girlfriend by driving off the bridge was in fact Stan. Eminem got back to Stan after receiving his last two letters, and the audio recording he recorded before his death. Eminem knows it's too late to 'save' Stan, but he wrote the letter anyways to provide mental closure for himself and Stan. Eminem realizes Stan was too messed up beyond saving.
Note Stan's extreme similarity to Eminem. This leads us to believe Stan struggled to have his own identity and wanted to live the fantasy that was Eminem.
Perhaps Stan isn't about a crazed fan and a suicide at all, but about Eminem himself. Perhaps he is "Stan" and struggles with his girlfriend and suicide. Writing the character Stan could have been a way for Eminem to deal with his struggles in life
So when Stan died, perhaps Eminem and his struggles died. Stan was just a metaphor for Eminem's struggles.?
