Elie and his family lives in Sighet, Hungarian Transylvania. He is interested in mysticism and uses Moishe the Beadle as his master.
World War ll has been going on for 3 years. The people in the town of Sighet begin to wonder if the front will be coming close to them or if the war would be over before it reaches Hungary.

Nazi soldiers enter Sighet and they formed ghettos for the Jews. Soon, they were transported to a concentration camp. Elie and his father were in the same train as a mad woman who kept onyelling about a fire.

Elie and his dad travel from Birkenau to Auschwitz and then to Buna. There Elie starts to reminisce on the idea of death.

Elie's father died leaving him with mixed emotions. He feels grief that his father died but also relief because now he doesn't have to worry about his father.
Why did he have to die?
On April 11, the Jews at Buchenwald were liberated including Elie. His tormented days were now over but his father was still dead.
