One evening Mathilde’s husband came home, holding a large envelope in his hand. She threw the invitation on the table resentfully. She had no jewels. “Go and see your friend and ask her to lend you some jewels.” her husband said.
The next day she went to her friend's house and told her of her distress. She took out a large box, brought it back, opened it. Suddenly she discovered a diamond necklace. Then she asked anxiously:"Would you lend me this, just this?" "Yes,of course."
After the party she took a final look at herself,in front of the mirror. But suddenly she uttered a cry. She no longer had the necklace round her neck! They looked in the folds of her dress,in her pockets, everywhere but they could not find it.
The next day in a shop they found a string of diamonds which seemed to be exactly what they were looking for. It was worth thirty-six thousand francs. Her husband had eighteen thousand francs which his father had left him. He would borrow the rest.
From then on, Mathilde knew the horrible life of the very poor. Each month they had to pay some notes, renew others, get more time. Her husband worked every evening and this life lasted ten years.
One day as she was walking she saw a woman walking with a child. It was her friend. "I am Mathilde." She told her the whole story. "Mine was an imitation! It was worth five hundred francs at most!” Her friend said.
