Malcolm, Donalbain, Lennox, and Banquo are stunned by Macduff's appearance with him exclaiming, "O horror, horror, horror! Tongue nor heart cannot conceive nor name thee!" Macbeth acts as if he were also affected by this tragic news.
An Old Man and Ross tell Macduff that Duncan's two sons, Donalbain and Banquo, have fled making it seem as though they killed their own father for the throne.
Macbeth hires murderers to kill Banquo and his son Fleance and upon doing so Banquo is murdered and Fleance escapes.
During a dinner with Ross, Lennox, and lords, Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost and is going crazy. Lady Macbeth yells at Macbeth for his behavior saying, "... Are you a man?".
The three witches are chanting curses repeating," Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble."
When Macbeth arrives he demands that the witches tell him his future. In response the witches give him riddles and show Macbeth three apparitions, the first, an armed head, the second a bloody child, and the third, a child crowned with a tree in his hand.
