Storyboard Text

  • What is a forklift?
  • Parts of the forklift
  • Front Wheels- Act as the Fulcrum or Teeter totter center for balance of the load and weight
  • Mast- Raises and lowers the forks (load)
  • Forks- support and carries the load such as a pallet or container
  • Weight- Acts as a counterbalance for the load- to prevent tipover
  • Forklift Physics
  • Load
  • Fulcrum
  • Counterbalance  Weight
  • Self-propelled vehicle that is designated to lift, transport, and position materials.
  • Forklift Physics Ex. 1
  • In order to understand how a forklift works, you 1st need to become familiar with it's parts.
  • Forklift Physics Ex. 2
  • Load exceeds capacity of forklift
  • Counterbalance  Weight not heavy enough to maintain stability
  • The weight of the load on the forks is counter-balanced by a counterweight at the rear of the vehicle- This forklift is STABLE
  • How much load can my forklift carry?
  • CAPACITY RATING= Distance between the LOAD CENTER and CENTER of the drive wheels
  • A shift in the Load Position (up the mast) or out on the forks changes the forklift's ideal fulcrum point (stability)
  • Load shifted forward
  • Fulcrum point moves creating instability
  • Counterbalance  Weight
  • When the vehicle is carrying a capacity load, it must be properly counter-balanced to meet the standards for stability. If you put too much load on the forks, you may tip the vehicle forward or lose control of steering because of insufficient weight on the rear wheels.
  • Fulcrum point moves creating instability
  • Capacity rating of a forklift is determined by considering the weight of the load and the distance between the load center and the center of the drive wheels which serve as the fulcrum or pivot point of the teeter-totter. As you increase the distance between these two points, you reduce the total load that can be handled by the truck.
