Thaddeus S. C. Lowe was the chief aeronaut for the Union Balloon Corps, The use of his balloons were popular along the Potomac River
The balloons were only used for spying purposes but they were extremely popular for the two years that they were in use (1861-1863)
The balloons played a big role in helping the Union armies, at one point Lowe prevented a Union regiment led by McClellan from being cornered and decimated through his hot air balloon spying.
Something that surprised me was that the Confederacy built two hot air balloons themselves but they were not used much before being captured by the Union.
Overall the use of hot air balloons in the civil war was beneficial to our nation because they were primarily used by the union to great effect.
Some extra information that I thought was cool was that Lincoln was an inventor whih indirectly led to the balloons being used in the war, because he was personally interested in the idea of using hot air balloons.
