Storyboard Text

  • Thabans rebel
  • The king is dead? we should revolt
  • Alexander breaks the news
  • Alex marches his army south to Thebes
  • The start of the revolt started when news of Alexander's 'death' reached Thebes. Thebes was looking for any excuse to rebel because they hated being under Macedonian occupation -since the battle of Chaeroneain 338BC-.
  • The three day Amnesty and peace terms
  • "I Alexander hearby grant you a three day amnesty"
  • Alexander was concerned on learning about the revolt of Thebes as he had only just secured the allegiance of the city states at the beginning of his reign because he had an army present with in which to bring the city states to terms.
  • The siege
  • Alex marched his men over 250 miles in 13 day. Arrian reports, "news that he had passed the gates did not reach the Thebans until his whole force was at Onchestus" a town 6 miles northwest of Thebes. The march was so swift that the Thebans were "shocked".
  • The aftermath
  • "I feel as though at long last Thebes has been punished for her betrayal in the Persian war."
  • Alexander wanted the Greeks to be on side with him and to support his invasion of Persia, but if he was seen to be destroying Greek cities, this would send a negative message to the other members of the League of Corinth and he might lose their support.
  • I will give the city a chance to realize the danger of their situation mwehehaheha!!!
  • Alex faced the issue of laying siege to a walled city that had a well-trained army. Alex ordered his infantry to attack the city's defenders outside the walls. The Macedonians won a decisive victory. 6000 Thebans were killed. Arrian reports "Alex himself was ever-present in the field".
