The symbol I chose was the black box. It symbolizes death and fear. Line 64-67 "The black box grew shabbier each year; by now it was no lomger completely black but splintered badly along one side to show the original wood color, and in some places faded or stained". Based off the way they describe it. Once you fid out what happens in the story you realize what the box actually sybolizes and it makes you realize why the box looks that way.
theme and theme
The example of imagery I used was from lines 322- 334. "Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a clearred space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her" I chose this because it's a very raw moment and it explained/showed just how tessie felt.
I chose an enthymeme as my figurative speech because the enthymeme. On line 303 the author says "show us her paper Bill" The people basically saying Bill show us your wives paper, instead of her showing them herself. I chose this because it was a great example of an enthymeme. It is also a good picture example and it shows how different things were in their time era.
The theme I chose was "gloomy/depressing" I chose this because it's basically what this story is about. It's a very strange / interesting aspect to lowering your population but I thought I should include a surreal moment to tie it all up. This scene especially was surprising because Tessie just realized she's going to loose her life and she can't do anything to help herself out. On line 304-305 the story says "Bill Hutchinson went over to his wife and forced the slip of paper out of her hand. It had a black spot on it."
