Storyboard Text

  • In this opening scene, Devon, only 15, is being arrested for putting her newly born baby in a dumpster. The baby was found unharmed and alive.
  • "Don't you think I would know if my daughter was pregnant!"
  • "This is important, okay? Concentrate on what I'm saying to you... You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say or do may be used against you in a court of law..."
  • After being arrested, the only person who shows Devon compassion and emotion towards her is the doctor examining her to make sure she is alright after birth. Not even Devons' mother stuck around, so having someone care for her and not judge her based on her actions was a change of scenery.
  • "I don't care about what part you may or may not have played in being here. That's history. It's done, it's over, and no one can change it. All I car about is your health."
  • Seeing her cell for the first time, Devon realizes that this is her new home, and calls it a "cage". Feeling trapped within the walls she is left alone for the first time in 48 hours.
  • Dark grey cement floor with a drain in the center. Stainless steel toilet and sink in the far corner... The faint reek of urine. A tiny, walled-in cage.
  • Devon is faced with court the following day to review why she is there, and to schedule her next court date to determine her verdict. Her lawyer defends her, but as he talks Devon starts to cry and feels a tight pain in her chest, which we find out later was caused from breast milk.
  • "Your Honor, clearly the State has not reviewed the respondents file. she has no prior arrests. And she's maintained an exemplary school record."
  • Karma, a new acquaintance, had stolen a spark from the cafeteria. Before Devon decides whether or not to tell on her, Karma tells her why, and her belief on being alive. A few days later, Karma attempts suicide with that spark. Devon feels responsible.
  • "If you can bleed- see it, feel it- then you know you're alive. It's irrefutable, undeniable proof. Sometimes I just need a little reminder. I'm alive. Are you, Devil?"
  • "Devon throws her head back, smiles up at the ceiling. She's never felt so free from something in her life. She'd won."
  • "I- I want to plead Guilty... I want to plead guilty because I am guilty."
