Luther thought that the Pope should not be apart of the Church
Pope Leo X thought that Luther should take back what he said or he should be excommunicated
He summoned Luther to the town of Worms (vawrmz) in 1521 to stand trial. Told to recant, or take back his statements, Luther refused.
Luther had to do what he thought was right
Charles V declared Luther an outlaw and a heretic. According to this edict, no one in the empire was to give Luther food or shelter. All his books were to be burned.
Prince Frederick the Wise of Saxony disobeyed the emperor. For almost a year after the trial, he sheltered Luther in one of his castles.
