Malachi, which "means 'my messenger'" stated that the Israelites weren't following God's rules and weren't doing so because the priests hadn't taught them correctly in the first place (Achtemeier).
"Follow God's rules... I will find help for you because the priests didn't help."
God would come down to His temple after allowing a servant come down to help teach the Israelites good vs bad. John the Baptist is this servant who “would prepare the Israelites “for Jesus Christ’s first coming" (Belkum).
"I will help these Israelites before God comes!"
The Israelites that respected God had no problem with John. However, many of the Israelites didn't like John because he wanted them to stop “denying workers their pay” and to stop “refusing to pay the tithes that support the needy” (The Bible and "The Poor").
"Please help me."
"I will not help a poor person like you."
Malachi told the people that a day would come where God would come and desolate the land of the people; "For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace..." (New American Study Bible, Malachi 4:1).
"All Israelites best be listening to John or God will destroy you!"
Only those who respected God would be spared; however, Elijah would come down before the day of the Lord and "restore the hearts of the fathers to their children" so that God would not "smite the land with a curse" (Malachi 4:6).
