One day, three men were drinking in a tavern at 9 a.m. Suddenly, all three noticed a funeral service passing by the tavern and upon realizing it was one of the men's old friends, all three decide to kill death in a drunken rage.
During their search of death, they come across and old man who is also looking for death so he can finally die. In their drunken rage, the men accuse him of being death's helper and demand he tell them where death is, so he tells them it is behind a distant tree.
Behind the tree, the trio find a pile of gold and decide to split it between the three of them and forget about killing death. They then draw straws to find out who must go to town to get wine and bread for them. The youngest is chosen for the job.
While the youngest is gone, the two eldest decide to kill the youngest by stabbing him in the back during a fake wrestling match when he gets back in order to split the gold between themselves and get more.
While in town, the youngest decides to get three bottles of wine and poison the two meant for the eldest two men in order to get the gold all for himself. He tells an apothecary dude that he has rats to kill.
The two men stabbed the youngest in the back and then drank the poisoned wine. All died and none got the gold. Moral of the story: don't succumb to averice.
