Storyboard Text

  • Cottage Industry
  • I am so tired. I have been working for hours, and I've only only made half a skirt!
  • Samuel Slater
  • I hope England doesn't hate me for stealing their plans...
  • Lowell Mills
  • My mom says not to go near there.
  • I'm scared!
  • One time, I heard SCREAMS from in there!
  • The cottage industry was when people had to make everything from scratch at their homes.
  • Working Conditions
  • Samuel Slater took the factory plans from England, and brought them to America, setting up the factories here.
  • Loom
  • The factories he set up were called the Lowell Mills. They were water powered, and were the first place that allowed women to work.
  • Effects
  • TJF Clothing
  • However, the 'mill girls' had to work long hours, and got very little pay. The work was dangerous; flying shuttles and hair caught up in mills were frequent troubles.
  • AHHH! Someone... Help! My... My HAIR!
  • The looms used made cloth quickly by weaving cotton. They were powered by the river.
  • Now, we can readily buy clothes in stores. Women are allowed to work, but there are laws preventing dangerous work and long hours. We also use electricity to power machines, instead of water.
