When Gatsby is with Daisy, "Gatsby, pale as death...Gatsby, his hands still in his pockets...His head leaned back so far that it rested against the face of a defunct mantelpiece clock...his distraught eyes stared down at Daisy" (Fitzgerald 86). This is proving that Gatsby tried to act poised, however in reality, he is not as calm as he may seem. In a bigger picture, people today try to do the same exact thing as Gatsby is doing.
He appears as Jay Gatsby, however, in reality, his name is James Gatz. "James Gatz-that was really, or at least legally, his name...So he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen-year-old boy would be likely to invent..." (Fitzgerald 98). Jay Gatsby introduced himself first to Dan Cody as Jay Gatsby. So, he appears as Jay Gatsby, when in reality, his name is James Gatz.
Gastby has a synecdoche, his smile, which makes people love his appearance. "He smiled understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles...believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself...Precisely it vanished, I was looking at a...rough neck..." (Fitzgerald 48). In reality, his smile is not how it may seem. Gatsby's appearance, makes him seem like a good and fun guy. But, the reality of this, is Gatsby is fake as well as his smile, he is a rough neck.
