I'm gonna buy a handgun, and it's gonna be great! I'm gonna name it Boris, and I'm gonna own it all myself!
DC V. HELLER, 2008
Sir, stop, you can't do that, that's illegal! D.C. has restricted who can buy handguns to only people registered by the police chief!!
A virtual ban on handguns, huh? Sounds anti-2nd-amendment to me! To court!
I'm the lawyer for D.C.! I'm gonna argue that the beginning clause of the 2nd amendment limits its usage only to those serving in militias! It's called the "collective right" interpretation!
I'm Heller's lawyer, and I'm gonna argue that the constitution grants the right to bear arms to every citizen, in an interpretation known as the "Individual Right" interpretation.
This court holds that the term "militia" applies to everybody, as back in the day, ever citizen was a militia member! We stand with McDonald v. Chicago in saying that the right to bear arms is an individual right that cannot be infringed.
