A local protest exploded into a general uprising which is known as the March Revolution. It forced Czar Nicholas II to step down from the thrown, and a year later revolutionaries killed him and his family.
Without any warning armed factory workers stormed the Winter Palace in Petrograd. They called themselves the Bolshevik Red Guards. They took over government offices and arrested leaders of the provisional government.
Leon Trotsky commanded the Bolshevik Red Army. From 1918-1920 the civil war raged in Russia. Western nations, including the US sent military aid and forces to Russia to help the White Army.
